Flying Dreams is the debut novel of author Akshay Sharma. In a candid chat, he spoke about his book and life. Excerpts:
QUES: How would you describe yourself in minimum words possible?
Akshay: Highly determined to achieve my flying dreams.
QUES: How did you get into writing?
Akshay: It was during 2012 when I first wrote a script for my short film. However, I only made three short films by then, but the interest in writing stories really fascinated me. I discovered myself as a writer and a storyteller.
QUES: Please introduce our readers to your novel The Flying Dreams?
Akshay: It’s all about achieving dreams. The character Aarav, who dreams to become a Magician right from the age of six, literally gets dejected from his real life, because of the restrictions set by his father. He then creates his own world of fantasies in his dreams and spends most of the time there. He meets his love of life, Zara, who supports him immensely, but one day he realizes and confuses his conscious mind with his sub-consciousness. Gradually, he longs for achieving his flying dreams!
QUES: When and how did the idea of The Flying Dreams strike you?
Akshay: “Flying dreams” is a type of dream, which we humans dream. When we do not achieve our goals in life, we keep dreaming, and finally give up. So, to connect to every single person I came up with this novel, which has a motivating, and an uplifting story of a dreamer. Therefore, the readers go deep inside their imaginations and think about their flying dreams.
QUES: Do you read books? Which one is your all-time favorite?
Akshay: I never read books before, but I have become a better reader now. My all-time favorite book is “The Innocent” by David Baldacci.
QUES: Is writing your way to release your stress or a professional pursuit?
Akshay: I want writing to become my professional pursuit. I believe that if we follow our dreams we can achieve even the impossible things in life.
QUES: When you are not writing novels, how do you spend your time? Any specific hobby?
Akshay: When I don’t write books, I spend most of my time with the music. I compose music and play various instruments. This heals my inner soul and brings happiness. I also like going to the gym and playing Squash, which is one of my favorite sports.
QUES: How would you describe the contemporary scenario of writing and reading in India?
Akshay: Reading in India is gradually taking a pace. People are more into mobile phones now, but I believe, they will come back to reading novels. Whereas, writing is blossoming in most of the individuals in India, which is a good sign. People are sharing their stories to the world, and de-stressing themselves.
QUES: Share the experience of your journey so far?
Akshay: Back in 2014, I first wrote a non-fiction story. I never told anyone I started writing, it just came as an immediate upsurge to me. In 2016, I wrote one of my famous book called “THE TRAGICAL ENGINEER”, which is still kept unfinished. I feel that a particular story needs more experience; and being optimistic, I will publish that project too. I even wrote two more books after that, which was completely left aside; actually, I never got that confidence to publish and make it public. But, it all happened during 2018 May, when I met Mr. SHIV KHERA, and got that confidence in me, to publish my dream work. With that courage, I started writing my book “THE FLYING DREAMS” on May 25, 2018 and finished it in 20 days. However, I took 4-5 months to edit it and come to the final stages. On October 5, 2018, my book was launched.
QUES: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful writer? Please share it with our readers?
Akshay: If there were a pattern, or formula to become successful, then by now everyone would have become a renowned writer. But, what I believe is; we must only write what we feel. That would turn a writer into a successful author.
QUES: What has been your favorite dream that inspires and you wish to fulfill?
Akshay: My favorite dream is to make flying dreams fly high with everyone. I want my book to reach the masses in India.
QUES: Let us know a quote that inspires you?
Akshay: My own quote which I have written in my book, inspires me a lot, “Fly with your dreams, but don’t fly in your dreams.”
QUES: Are we going to read more from you in the near future? Any new project that you are working on?
Akshay: Yes, this journey of writing different books will continue further. I have many different stories to share, and I will not disappoint my readers, friends, and well-wishers.
*We wish Akshay all the very best for his future endeavors.*
About Flying Dreams:
Magic was not just a word, but it was a world for Aarav. An illusion bigger than his life. His dad, Mr. Sen was not confident about his magic but his mother had faith in him. Being confused in his dad’s restrictions and mom’s support, Aarav inculcated something unique in his behavior. Consecutive obstacles made Aarav feel dejected in real life. Gradually, he created his own space in his imagination where he met his love, Zara, who loved and supported him immensely. His imagination was overwhelming, but that affected his real life. What made him go to a parallel world, beyond the reality of his existence? What made him dream so much that it never reminded him to draw a line between dream and reality? Was his life real or just an illusion?
