Law as a profession excites numerous youngsters but very few of them manage to go up the ladder. There are umpteen struggles in the initial days when you are still learning the basics of the game. Yours Legally by Sonia Sahijwani is a collection of short stories encapsulating the initial days of a young lawyer Sia as she meanders through various opportunities coming her way.

The unique thing about this book is its central theme. It deals with the law profession which is explicitly talked about rarely in books. I loved that the author went ahead and chose this theme. Also, the short stories are not independent but surprisingly correlated. The book enmeshes the experiences of Sia in the courtroom and captures the reality behind the law and order in India. I felt connected to Sia as she keeps on taking the challenges in her stride and goes on to grab every opportunity to prove her mettle and evolve.

Each story has a different aspect of Indian society. It presents the human nerves so well. From an old woman to a Judge with astute judgment, everything seemed real to me. The characters are sketched finely and put into the story with precision. The writing style is kept simple and this makes reading the book easy. The subtle sarcasm and compelling theme provide for a refreshing reading experience. The book definitely stands out because of its UN-cliche focal point.

My only point of discontent with the book is poor editing which has left its imprints throughout the book. I found a few typos which really didn’t go well with me. So, a round of editing is suggested. Additionally, I personally feel that the writing could have been more nuanced and enhanced with depth. Courtroom needs attention and I feel we must shed light on this subject.

I can’t help but admire the cover which is visually appealing and fine to touch. I thoroughly loved it.

Overall, the book is a breezy read and must be picked up for a light but a different reading experience.

  1. The bestselling The Millionaire Next Door identifies seven common traits that show up again and again among those who have accumulated wealth. Most of the truly wealthy in this country don’t live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue-they live next door. This new edition, the first since 1998, includes a new foreword for the twenty-first century by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley.
