Aagaz by Basaba Dutta is a collection of Hindi poems reflecting upon life and love. The primary voice in the poems is calling out for his beloved. He is trying to recollect the memories, weave them, and write them down to ease himself. He is melancholic about not being able to stay with his love for long. However, he is glad to be the safe keeper of the treasure trove of memories. And that, my friend, is enough for the lover.

Not just love, the author also dwells upon the intricacies of life and worldly relations. One would also find some important life lessons sneaking out from the austerely arranged rhythmic verses. In some of the poems, you would find Urdu that does add to its overall appeal. And thus, the book turns out to be a soothing read that would indulge any beginner to the moderate level reader.

I did find a few poems not exactly engaging. They lacked the quintessential poetic touch. And perhaps, better editing would have rendered the entire collection to look better. However, barring those few, others were a fine treat for light and leisurely reading.

MY RATING: 3/ 5
