My Review

The Scent of Him by Anubha Chawla is a murder mystery set in Rock Island. It is about a girl who is on a mission to unravel the truth behind the murder of women on the Island. Replete with intrigue and suspense, the book is a breezy and engaging read.

One high-profile woman is murdered and there are six suspects. Each suspect has got a novel motive to slain the woman. Alongside this, prior to the woman’s order, there have been a few other women who were murdered in a similar fashion. The pattern of their killings was weird and gives away the clue to rapes. However, the truth is far apart from what we perceive it to be.

The book essentially focuses on the intersection of lust and love. Through a simple murder mystery, the author attempts to deliver an important message pertaining to the society. It opens our eyes to the fact that both men and women could force oneself on the other gender. There is no absolute truth regarding rapes. We cannot assume one section to be always superior and other inferior. There can be multiple possibilities and it’s time we become receptive to acknowledging and accepting them.

I liked the story narrated in the first person. It is a good mix of mystery, thrill, ugliness, and suspense. I finished it in no time because of its length. Moreover, the story is woven very well that one cannot help but just read to find out the truth. The names of the characters and places were quite interesting. The underlying themes discussed in the light of the primary plot of murder mystery was amazing. The language and writing were smooth enough for anyone to read it.

There were some points which didn’t interest me. I found the explanation of the relation between the title and the plot inadequate for my knowledge. The story is smooth. However, a more concentrated approach towards building a sharp narrative would have made the book better. Similarly, I felt that narration could have been more refined so as to suit the atmosphere of a murder mystery and thriller. Nonetheless, it was a good attempt at debut work and I would want to read more of the author’s work in the future.
