Book Review

‘Neck-Deep!’ by Neelesh Kumar is a fictional account set around the 2015 Chennai floods that devastated the Southern city of India. Revolving around three best friends, Sachin, Rohit, and Neha, this story showcases the reality one has to go through when one is stuck in testing times such as floods. It further brings forth the value of friendships that help one in surviving difficult times.

The idea of weaving a story around a real-life incident has definitely lent some fun to the Neck-Deep! Although the story of three friends is casual, the incorporation of a thing as grave as a flood brings in interest and uniqueness.

Both the writing and execution of the plot are a blend of grey and vibrant tones. While I was trying to gauge the amount of insensitivity shown by the higher officials, I was happy to see how people come together to help each other in times of crisis.

Peppered with light humour and some incredible innovations (the water drums!), Neck-Deep! was a breezy weekend read for me. Definitely recommended for beginners.
