my-review

Rohan, a typical teenager dealing with common issues, finds himself grappling with racism, the expectations of his demanding parents, and unrequited love for a girl named Steven. In addition to this, there’s a serial killer on the loose, setting the stage for what seems like a typical teenage mystery novel.

However, everything takes a dramatic turn when Rohan starts hearing voices that grant him superpowers. Initially using these abilities for personal gain and popularity, Rohan’s journey takes an unexpected twist when he discovers the limitations of his powers, leading to a transformative moment that alters his aspirations.

The book skillfully immerses the reader in the vibrant streets of New York, providing a genuine New Yorker’s perspective. The narration, resembling a diary at times, and the incorporation of cultural dialects from different ethnic groups are particularly praiseworthy. The author’s ability to capture the essence of the city is commendable, evoking the voice of Nas, the renowned New York rapper, in my mind from the very first chapter.

Author Lincoln Lee ambitiously blends elements of a coming-of-age narrative, a superhero story, a gripping mystery, and a romance, all while addressing the struggles of an Asian-American teenager in contemporary America. Despite the complexity of these themes, Lee skillfully weaves them together seamlessly, avoiding excessive exposition and ensuring the narrative remains engaging throughout.

Despite Rohan being the central character with evident character development, the author ensures that the other characters are equally well-crafted. There is a thoughtful approach to creating characters with both strengths and flaws, a level of detail often lacking in secondary characters.

The book offers everything a fantasy novel enthusiast could desire. Beyond the fantastical elements, readers can expect to emerge from this experience with a sense of enlightenment. While it is a lengthy read with deeper themes uncommon in YA sci-fi/fantasy, the narrative maintains a vibrant energy, ensuring there are no dull moments.
